This article will discuss the significance of goal setting and how people can begin establishing goals. The purpose of this article is to teach young people/young adults (like me) how to make objectives and observe what rewards come with them.

Firstly, goals are objectives that we wish to achieve within a specific time frame; these objectives can be both long-term and short-term. It is a pretty simple notion, yet one that many people struggle with in their daily lives.

Some may be unaware of the negative consequences of “no goal setting,” but according to The Prince Trust, 59% of young people in the United Kingdom are concerned about the future of their generation (Birchall, 2022). Although this is partly because of the recent Covid-19 outbreak, another explanation is that many people do not know how to prepare for their futures because they believe that achieving their job goals will become unachievable.

When someone thinks that they can not achieve their goals, then there is a possibility that one might not have a good plan for both the short-term and long-term goals (as longer-term goals should be achieved via shorter-term aims). Hence, why it is important to know what you would like after a longer period of time, so you can set goals for a shorter timeframe. A quote that would perfectly connect with this is “If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else.” — Lawrence J. Peter.

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” — Henry Ford

I have got good news for you. Everything can be a goal for you! Of course, you should try to be realistic, as some things are most likely not going to happen (for example: winning the lottery). However, if you set a couple of SMART goals you can work to achieve them, and the best part is that there is no one to stop you, besides yourself!

Goals setting/planning will significantly increase your chances of realizing your aims. This is because it will help you to get motivated, give you a feeling of responsibility, give you an overview of where you are where you were and where you need to be, and it helps you to set priorities (Straw, 2023).

Hence, following the goal-oriented mindset, you should set some goals for the longer term (3+ years) and set short-term goals within that timeframe, to progress towards the end goal. This means that you can reach your final goal, by setting realistic SMART goals, leading to more successful outcomes in your personal career. Today could be a fresh start, for you to improve yourself for the future.
